Amazing Heroes

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I recently received an email announcing one of last year’s recipiant of the Congressional Medal of Honor, which is the highest military honor. The winner of this award surprised me, but once I read about his actions I was touch, amazed, and proud. Here is a picture of this amazing hero.

Yes, the winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor was a dog named Brutus.

Brutus won the Congressional Medal of Honor last year from his tour in Iraq .  His handler and four other soldiers were taken hostage by insurgents.  Brutus and his handler communicate by sign language and he gave Brutus the signal that meant ‘go away but come back and find me’.  The Iraqis paid no attention to Brutus.  He came back later and quietly tore the throat out of one guard at one door and another guard at another door.

The guys were being held in an old warehouse and Brutus jumped against one of the doors repeatedly until it opened.  He went in and untied his handler and they all escaped.  He’s the first K9 to receive this honor.

Despite these amazing acts, if  Brutus knows you’re ok, he’s a big old lug and wants to sit in your lap and enjoys the company of cats.

I absolutely love animal stories like this, because they show us that animals are more than possessions or something to look at in a zoo.  They have personalities and needs not all that different than our own. I encourage you this week to look a the animals in your life and be thankful for the joy and compassion they bring to your life.

An Odd Couple of Couples

Monday, March 5th, 2007

I wouldn’t believe this picture if I didn’t read the story myself. (Check our the story here)
A set of twin orangutans, Nia and Irma, and twin tigers, Dema and Manis, that were abandoned at birth have become inseparable playmates in Cisarua, Indonesia.
In nature these two creatures would never meet, and unfortunately instinct will kick in sooner or later, but wow what a testament to the ability to be friendly no matter where one comes from or what one looks like.
I say these infants have the right idea. Their innocence allows them to play sleep and eat near one another without a quarrel. Playful ‘banter’ sure, but not a hint of violence.
I encourage you to take note of these cuddly creatures and try to step out and be friendly toward someone unexpected today, or even all week. See what that does for your own attitude, and what an influence you can have on the people around you.

Have you ever smelled a puppy?
Silly question I know, and if you haven’t go smell a clean baby. (Be sure and ask the parents first ;)

Now why would I ask such a silly question? Well my sister and her husband recently adopted two puppies and I got meet them, and just to smell them brought a smile to my face and a joy to my heart. Yes I know this is silly, but it’s true.

Why do you think such a silly smell would bring a smile to your face? This is what came to my mind when I thought about this question. Maybe that’s what heaven smells like. Huh…? Think about it. New babies and New puppies (when clean) smell fresh. So close to their time of creation, untainted by the world or puberty (hehehehe)

I don’t know what heaven truly smells like, but if it’s anything like puppies that will be one of many reasons to be on the reservation list. J

Dogs love their friends and bite their enemies, quite unlike people, who are incapable of pure love and always have to mix love and hate.

Get excited!

Life is full of simple pleasures, and for us to enjoy our world and our lives we need to hold these moments as little treasures.

To take a walk or go outside is a chance to explore and be amazed by what surrounds us.
To eat is an amazing show of provision. The worries of the day may be stacking up but the time to eat is a time to give thanks and cherish those you are with.

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It’s the best deal man has ever made.

As you might have guessed from previous postings, I’m a dog person. Currently I’m a stay at home wife as I look for a new job, but there have been two dogs to keep me company Faith and Maizy. And in their company comes a unique observation of the lives they lead. So I hope to share some of their loving inspiration with you.

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.
