March Book of the Month- Let's Chase the Moon by K.L. Carter

Physicist K. L. Carter’s picture book explores family dynamics, empathy, and the joy of discovering who we are.

Let's Chase the Moon Book Review

K.L. Carter's children's book Let's Chase the Moon follows a family as they navigate their day, embracing differences and finding harmony within their family.

Amara and Danin are siblings struggling to understand one another. Both have goals and dreams, but something seems to get in the way, each other.

This book does a good job of walking through sibling conflict and growing an understanding for each person in your family.

The parents in the story use science lingo and space allegories to help make abstract ideas like acceptance, value, and identity more tangible to young readers.

Later in the book, there is an issue of bullying raised, and you get to see how both siblings learn to advocate and seek help in a hard situation. You watch Danin struggle with his ADHD in certain situations, and how Amara learns empathy for others like her brother. The parent figures are the guiding figures who help the kids understand their emotions and each other. There is no mention of marriage or the relationship between the father and mother, which, as a parent, made me wonder a few things. The lack of clarity does allow kids with separated or divorced parents feel seen. Both are supportive and helpful in bringing understanding to the kids as they face challenges.

There is a lot to this book. It is aimed at ages 4-8, with a great glossary and extension activities in the back. For busy kids with ADHD, this can be a great tool to help them feel seen, though they might have to read it in small chunks, since it is 164 pages long. Though the art is AI-generated with an illustrator's guidance, there is good consistency in the images that many AI images lack when used in picture books.

I look forward to more from KL Carter and her mission to help kids be the 'stars that they are.'
