Exploring Faith Through Literature
Valerie - Welcome to Bookworthy. Today, we're discussing Rebecca Galeskas and her delightful picture book, Little Lion Puts on the Armor of God. This charming story features a young lion who constructs armor using various crafting materials found around the house. However, as he eagerly runs through the halls to showcase his creation, the armor falls apart. Ultimately, he learns that there’s much more to the armor of God than he initially realized. Welcome to Bookworthy, Rebecca!
Rebecca - Thank you for having me! I'm thrilled to be here.
Valerie - It’s a pleasure to have you! Let's start with a light question. What was the first Bible verse you memorized?
Rebecca - I'm not sure if it's technically the first, but it’s the one I remember using in my life. I grew up in church, so I have been memorizing scriptures forever. I distinctly remember memorizing the 23rd Psalm during vacation Bible school. I was proud, hoping to earn more candy for repeating it! One vivid memory is from when I was around four to six years old. I was scared in the middle of the night and walking to my parents' room. As I walked through the house, I recited, “When I'm afraid, I will trust Him” (Psalm 56:3) to calm myself. So, while I’ve memorized many verses, this one truly resonated with me.
Valerie - That’s a powerful way to connect with scripture. It’s heartwarming to see how early those lessons began. Can you share more about your book, Little Lion Puts on the Armor of God?
Rebecca - Absolutely! The book was inspired by my son, Judah. The idea of the "Lion of Judah" felt like a natural fit. I've always loved writing and wanted to create something impactful. Initially, the character idea sat in my notes, waiting for the right moment. While pregnant with my daughter, I found myself awake at night, and suddenly, my creative side took over. I wrote the entire book then and there. It was a wonderful way to engage my children with God's Word through a fun narrative. The rhyme scheme reflects my love for poetry and music, and my mom encouraged me to do something more with it.

Valerie - What a beautiful origin story! I love how Little Lion explores the elements of the armor of God. You highlight not only the items like the shield of faith and helmet of salvation but also the deeper meaning behind these concepts. Was it enjoyable to dig into these elements while writing?
Rebecca - It was both enjoyable and enlightening. I’ve always been a building-block learner, so understanding these concepts was crucial for me. I wanted to convey this greater picture of the gospel while ensuring that children could comprehend it at different levels as they grow. The editing process was a meditative practice, allowing me to reflect on the deeper meanings of scripture. I hope my children, and others, can make that head-to-heart connection with God’s love and the gifts He offers.
Valerie - That’s a wonderful ambition! The idea that these truths can resonate with kids and guide them in their journeys is powerful. You mentioned that Little Lion ultimately learns he doesn't need to wear armor to serve God.
Rebecca - Yes! That realization unfolds naturally in the story. We often try to put on our metaphorical armor in various ways until we find that true protection comes from sitting at Jesus' feet. When we allow our own armor to fall away, we can embrace the love and strength God provides.

Valerie – That's beautifully said. If you could wish for one takeaway for kids reading your book, what would it be?
Rebecca - I hope they understand that God has immense gifts for them, not based on who they are, but because of who He is. This idea that we need to connect with our hearts and move beyond what our minds think can change their lives. God loves each of them immensely, and there's so much joy to unpack from that.
Valerie - That’s such a sweet message. I felt that warmth while reading. Did you always aspire to be a writer?
Rebecca - Definitely! Writing has always been part of my identity. I adored reading and writing from a young age. I remember my mom finding me in the dark, flipping through the pages of books just for the tactile experience! I've always kept journals, and during middle school, I began writing songs. Writing was something I cherished and pursued throughout school, eventually leading me to study English and creative writing in college.

Valerie - That’s such an inspiring journey! It’s important to encourage our kids to find what they enjoy. What advice would you give on helping them discover their unique gifts?
Rebecca - My mom always encouraged me to reflect on what I'm good at that feels effortless. We often overlook our innate talents, assuming they aren’t special. Helping kids recognize their strengths can lead them to their calling.
Valerie - So true! You mentioned earlier that you have a special fondness for classic literature. Do you have a favorite book aside from the Bible?
Rebecca - Yes! Les Misérables by Victor Hugo holds a special place in my heart. I chose to read it in college, and its complexity kept me captivated as I explored its characters and themes.

Valerie - Classics like that really highlight the nuances of human experience, don’t they?
Rebecca - Absolutely! They reflect relationships and the ways different lives intersect, which is meaningful.

Valerie - That’s a beautiful perspective! So, what’s next for you?
Rebecca - Right now, I'm working on the sequel: Little Lion and the Fruit of the Spirit. I'm excited about it! I plan to illustrate this one as well, hoping to hone my artistic skills.

Valerie - That sounds fantastic! I look forward to seeing how Little Lion navigates that journey. Where can readers find your books?
